Artists' Voices
The Prison Creative Arts Project invites every artist included in the Annual Exhibition to provide an artist’s statement to accompany their work. Artists use this opportunity to talk about their artistic process, their identity as artists, the communities they are a part of, the inspiration for their creative practices, and the transformative effects art making has had on them. These statements bring the voices of the artists themselves into the gallery to accompany their works.
When you view an individual artwork in this exhibition, you will see a link to the artist’s statement if that artist provided a statement. These pages highlight some of the most important themes and messages gathered from the statements of the artists featured in this year’s Annual Exhibition. Reading these statements will let you hear their voices, better understand their art, and connect across seemingly insurmountable distances.
