Trash is treasure in prison where artists are masters at turning ordinary materials into beautiful objects. Most things that can be picked up and held can be transformed into art. Favorite materials are toilet paper and glue, soap, cardboard, paper, stones from the yard, plastic lids, and plastic bottles. Artists can also order simple craft materials from catalogues. Making miniature objects is a way of cherishing beloved objects and experiences. In the words of one artist, “It is the creation of a kind of story about what you appreciate and value.”
